Virutal Issue on Multiculturalism

Edited by Katharine Adeney

Debates surrounding identity politics and multiculturalism have proliferated in the last few years. The increasing political salience of contemporary debates concerning immigration, the appropriate means for states to manage diversity, the backlash against some Muslim groups, as well as the rise in right wing extremism in the wake of September 11th 2001 have increased the policy ramifications of these debates. But these debates are not new and should not be seen as related only to the security discourse. The papers contained within this virtual issue of Political Studies bring together this journal's principal contributions to the multicultural debate over the last decade. These papers cover a range of topics, from the theoretical (related to issues concerning equality, toleration as well as nationalism) to the practical (related to British multicultural debates, Islamophobia and issues relating to sex equality). The articles here make a significant contribution to our understanding of these issues. Taken together they demonstrate the wide ranging parameters of these debates as well as their importance in the contemporary world.
